Dear Colleagues, Members of SDPA & PDPA,

If you haven't done so already, I am again sending this letter in request for your urgent support of Senate Bill 895 (Allopathic) and Senate Bill 896 (Osteopathic), introduced by Senator John C. Rafferty, Jr and Senator Richard Alloway, II, which would remove significant barriers to Physician Assistant (PA) practice in Pennsylvania.

The Bills would make the following PA-positive changes:
  • Add a permanent PA seat to each board;
  • Allow for co-signature to be determined by the physician and PA at the practice level;
  • Remove the requirement that practice written agreements need to be submitted to and approved by the board.
  • Remove the requirement for physicians to be on-site at satellite locations.

Currently, Dr. Joseph W. Laskas, DO, a dermatologist practicing in Delaware County in Pennsylvania, has authored Resolution 17-41 brought forth to the PA Medical Society, which opposes this legislation.  Also, the American Medical Associations House of Delegates, (introduced by the Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Surgery, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society of Dermatopathology, as well as others) have introduced Resolution 230 in opposition of these measures.

I strongly encourage you and your supervising physicians to write a letter to Senators Rafferty and Alloway, your local state senator, and the Presidents of both the Allopathic and Osteopathic Medical Societies.  The letter can be brief, just so it shows that you are in support of the legislation!

Please find below attachments of Senate Bill 895, the Resolutions in opposition by the AMA House of Delegates and Dr. Joseph W. Laskas, the PSPA letter, and a letter template if you wish to use to show your support.

The future of the PA profession relies on you and your support of these Bills.

Thank you.

With kindest regards,

Jil Swanson, MPAS, PA-S,
President of PDPA
